The Melanchthonhaus (Melanchthon House) in Wittenberg was included in the UNESCO World Heritage register in 1996 and the largely original structure is itself an exhibit.
Consequently, the criteria for the redesign are as follows: concentrating on the essentials and reducing visual clutter, strengthening the relationship between the building and the mise-en-scène of its contents, and accentuating the historic structure in accordance with conservational principles. The story of Melanchthon’s life in this house is told through unobtrusive exhibits.
While Melanchthon’s house will feature abstract spatial arrangements without original exhibits, an extension to the house will host a permanent exhibition with valuable period pieces (architecture: Dietzsch & Weber, Halle). High-quality display cases create ideal conditions for the preservation of both handwritten and printed works.
