Project text:

With its on-board exhibition reflecting the “Demographic Opportunity” theme of Science Year 2013, the MS Wissenschaft sailed through 40 cities in Germany and Austria.

The Federal Education Ministry’s floating Science Center was particularly targeted at school pupils 12 years and older as well as families, offering them a fascinating insight into current research.

The interactive on-board exhibition Alle Generationen in einem Boot (Every Generation in One Boat) was very much focused on the issue of demographic transformation. Life expectancy in Germany is increasing, while fewer children are being born. More and more people from diverse cultures and countries are living here together. This is a major challenge for our society, but at the same time an opportunity. We can develop new, more diverse and more flexible modes of togetherness. In an exhibition space covering around 600 square metres, youths and adults were able to find out the contribution that research institutes are making to this issue. The largely interactive exhibits gave visitors a lot more than just hard facts about demographic transformation. Instead, they look at issues like how our life paths have changed in the last few decades, how urban and rural regions are adjusting to changes and how we can live healthy, self-determined lives for as long as possible.

All of this was told through both scientific and illustrative media installations. This included the conception and design of hands-on and interactive exhibits that accompanied visitors through the exhibition in a playful way. The versatile colour concept led visitors through the various thematic areas of the exhibition.
