IGLHAUT + von GROTE Ausstellungsgestaltung und Design / Science Center Universum Bremen
Project text:

The Science Center Universum® in Bremen enables active and emotional access to scientific issues of human life at the intersection of nature and technology. Here natural science phenomena can be discovered through hands-on features and media stations in over 300 exhibits.

IGLHAUT + von GROTE conceived the permanent exhibition with the objective of visually differentiating parts of the exhibition while also transforming the previously darkened Science Center into a bright, open exhibition space. The design of the new exhibition in the Universum® Bremen responds to the rounded building shell with asymmetrical forms, and uses fresh colours to create an open, bright and vibrant atmosphere. Daylight is complemented by a distinctive ceiling grid made up of LED linear luminaires, resulting in a bright basic mood which can be adapted to differing lighting states through a daylight sensor.

The exhibition elements combine with a colourful, distinctive graphic concept formed of distorted large-format photos and text clouds to form a design unity. The photos represent the associative background for often complex scientific content. One particular challenge for the Science Center, which is primarily visited by school classes and is open to a height of three levels, is the room acoustics. The solution was a concept which incorporates acoustic panels and sound-absorbing wall materials.

The overall conception includes the integration of media, exhibits, multimedia elements, text and graphics to communicate the scientific background, to permeate the experience and to aid comprehension.
