Project text:

The special exhibition “Tell Me about Animals – Animals in Children’s Literature and Nature” shows the relationships between humans and animals in children’s literature and other fictional texts in a playful and interactive way. IGLHAUT + von GROTE designed an interactive exhibition with a focus on nature and children’s literature. Thanks to its various hands-on exhibits, it is a place of adventure for young and old.

The exhibition architecture is based on stage productions and children’s theatre. It consists of natural, simple materials from stage construction that are untreated and recyclable. Thanks to their relative simplicity, the spatial elements could be entirely produced in the in-house workshop of the Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch.

The exhibition is organised by different fictional scenes, brought to life by pictorial-spatial interpretations of well-known children’s books and supplemented by numerous animal specimens from the museum’s collection. The exhibition concept provides for two narrative levels: firstly, the literary narrative and the literary gaze; secondly, scientific information about the natural lives of the animals presented in the books.

The exhibition is characterised by dialogue-oriented stations for people with different levels of background knowledge and different ages, in both analogue and digital formats. A mobile made of origami animals is gradually created over the course of the exhibition through the participation of visitors. Play areas and a reading meadow invite children and young people to participate. The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch Oldenburg (the State Museum for Nature and People Oldenburg) and the Forschungsstelle Kinder- und Jugendliteratur an der Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg (the Research Centre for Children’s and Youth Literature at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg).
