Picture: Miraikan
“Science+Fiction” was a touring exhibition organised to mark the 40th anniversary of the Volkswagen Foundation Hanover, which examined the image of reality in science and art. Where is the boundary between the other and the self in a globalised world? How does perception function by means of the brain? What is the significance of interventions into matter on an atomic level? What promises and errors are generated by the science culture? In this exhibition, science and art entered into an experimental union: scientific images and themes were interpreted in an artistic way, and works of art were given a counterweight by confronting them with scientific facts and stories. Images, objects, preparations and media centred on focal points of research and played with their cultural preconditions – a modern curiosity cabinet of scientific knowledge and art.
Internationally acclaimed artists and scientists contributed to the exhibition, which was designed by gewerk, Berlin, on the basis of a modular container principle; this was then utilised and modified by the artists. Eight venues, various language versions and accompanying programmes made considerable demands on the organisers and the exhibition team. The following artists or teams of artists were commissioned to contribute works: Atelier von Lieshout, Rotterdam; Dellbrügge & de Moll, Berlin; Christoph Keller, Berlin; M+M, Munich; Sommerer & Mignonneau, Gifu, Japan.
